Our Manifesto
The Beginning: A Manifesto of Fluidity
Vague is the French word for "Wave." To us, it represents fluidity an indefinite shape that changes continuously, never replicating itself exactly. A wave is born, crashes, recedes, and returns transformed. The essence remains the same, but its form is constantly shifting.
This is precisely how we view the life of our garments. The concept of Vague Atelier was born from a deep-seated passion for garments that carry the charm of other lives, the taste of past stories, and the scent of places long changed. A wedding dress typically comes to life and dies on the exact same, single day. Why not give it the chance to experience something more? Someone else?
The gowns we carefully select and rescue strip themselves of all traditional limitations and preconceptions. They are dedicated to anyone who wishes to wear them, wherever and however they feel best reflects their identity. Vague thrives on the desire to bring these haute couture creations into a renaissance, dismantling long-standing stereotypes regarding their function. For us, there are no limits on wearability based on gender, sexuality, or orientation only the desire of an individual to make a garment live again, adapting it to their own true self.
Our Roots: A Rural Atelier in Tuscia
Our sanctuary is a rural, bucolic farmhouse nestled in the countryside of Tuscia. Far from the frantic chaos of major metropolises, this environment steeped in nature, silence, and history deeply inspires our daily work.
Vague Atelier is a reality intimately connected to its territory: all of our team members come from local provincial backgrounds. This human and geographical bond translates into an intimate, careful approach rooted in the values of community and slow craftsmanship.
Behind our e-commerce platform for the sale and rental of vintage bridal wear ranging from unique artisanal pieces to designer archive creations stands our team:
- Paola Grappasonni, mother, lifelong vintage enthusiast, who has spent years researching, discovering, and selecting our textile gems with a discerning eye, while guiding the upcycling process with the support of expert collaborators.
- Margherita Cafagna, born in Rome and a Scenography graduate from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, introduced to the vintage world as a child by her mother, bringing her theatrical and visual aesthetic vision to the brand.
The Value of Time: Restoration, Upcycling, and Sustainability
Choosing a vintage wedding gown is not merely an aesthetic choice; it is a profound act of sustainability and environmental mindfulness. Gowns of the past embody a rarity that is impossible to find today: premium fabrics shaped by historical craftsmanship and hand-finished details that mass production and fast fashion have nearly erased. Embracing vintage means honoring this intrinsic preciousness.
Our process is divided into two core approaches:
- Conservative Restoration: Each selected gown is closely studied and undergoes a meticulous archival restoration to preserve its original integrity, reviving the fabrics and historical details so they are ready to experience life once again.
- The Alchemy of Upcycling: Sometimes, vintage gowns are deemed "beyond repair" due to localized damage over time. To us, these are never failures, but opportunities. Through a thoughtful upcycling process, we salvage the pristine fragments of these unrecoverable dresses antique lace, embroideries, precious organza and combine them to create entirely new, unique, and unrepeatable bridal designs. Fragments of different histories merge into a brand-new story.
Analog Aesthetics: Stripping the Gown of Glossy Sacredness
Traditional bridal boutiques have conditioned us to a glossy, rigid, and artificial wedding industry, enclosed in an untouchable sacredness that often intimidates rather than inspires. Vague Atelier rejects this narrative.
We want to speak of something true, authentic, and grounded in reality. For this reason, our communication and imagery are entirely curated using analog photography and videography. We use VHS tapes for our videos and film for our photographs, capturing that imperfect, warm, and nostalgic grain that only analog mediums can deliver.
In our campaigns, you will find young faces and everyday settings. We actively involve young artists and other emerging brands to build a living, courageous cultural ecosystem. By stripping the wedding dress of its unapproachable aura, we bring it back to its purest essence: a vehicle for personal expression, entirely free and real.
